Different ingredients have different densities. Enter a volume and select an ingredient to get the approximate weight.
How to use
- Use the Volume Converter to convert between cups, tablespoons, ml, and other units — type in either field
- The quick reference table shows common equivalents at a glance
- Use the Ingredient Weight section to find how much an ingredient weighs by volume (e.g. 1 cup of flour ≈ 120g)
- The Oven Temperature section converts between °F, °C, and Gas Mark — type in either temperature field
- Click common oven preset cards to quickly see the equivalents
About this Cooking Conversion Tool
Recipes from different countries and sources use different measurement systems — US volume measures (cups, tablespoons) versus metric weight (grams, milliliters) — and converting between them isn't always a simple multiplication, since ingredient density varies.
Volume vs. weight: why they don't convert the same way for every ingredient
A cup of flour and a cup of sugar are the same volume but different weights, because the ingredients pack differently. This is why baking recipes that specify grams are more precise than those specifying cups — weight measurement removes the variability caused by how tightly an ingredient is packed into a measuring cup.
Common conversion reference points
- 1 US cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = approximately 237 ml
- 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons = approximately 14.8 ml
- 1 cup of water weighs approximately 237 grams; 1 cup of all-purpose flour weighs approximately 120–125 grams (less dense, so less weight per cup)
- 1 US fluid ounce = approximately 29.6 ml
US cups vs. UK/Commonwealth cups
A US cup (237 ml) and a UK/Australian/Canadian metric cup (250 ml) are not identical, a detail that trips up cross-border recipe conversions in ways a "1 cup = 1 cup" assumption misses. For most home cooking the difference is small enough not to matter, but for precise baking it can affect the result.
